My physical fitness routine consists of a mix of cardio and strength training. Like many of you, I enjoy sweating, elevating my heart rate, breaking personal records in weightlifting, and improving my stability and balance.

I can’t say I love working out, but I do enjoy the benefits of it.

I used to be someone who didn’t have a lot of mental or physical stamina. Although my job as a clinician was stressful, I was so used to pushing through things without really feeling good about it. Not to mention, I became exhausted easily.

Now, my body is going through a transformation. I’m increasing mitochondrial efficiency, improving my VO2 max—both crucial and essential for longevity—and walking on the path toward wellness.

Or am I?

When you see the title of this blog, you might ask:

“What on earth is she talking about? Of course sweating is good for you!”

But the relationship between sweating and health is a little more complicated than assuming that more sweat automatically means a healthier body.

So, let’s take a closer look at sweat, what it does, and whether it can help or hurt us.

Why Sleep Changes During Menopause

Research estimates that between 40% and 60% of menopausal women experience sleep disturbances, making insomnia one of the most common complaints during this stage of life.

These changes don’t occur because of a single hormone. Instead, they reflect the interaction between estrogen, progesterone, the nervous system, metabolism, and the brain’s sleep centers.

Three Different Ways We Sweat

Let’s look at three separate scenarios and what sweating is doing to the body in each one.

Scenario #1: Sweating During Exercise

You work out at the gym, whether you’re running on the treadmill or pedaling on a stationary bike.

You push yourself hard and follow interval training: pushing your heart rate into Zone 4 or 5 and then recovering in Zone 1 or 2.

This workout really puts your heart to the test, and you can definitely sweat a lot during it.

Scenario #2: Sweating in a Sauna

You step into a sauna.

The temperature is set to 150 degrees or higher.

Without moving a finger, you begin sweating profusely.

Scenario #3: Night Sweats During Menopause

You’re going through menopause.

Around 3 a.m., you start feeling hot and restless. Then, all of a sudden, your body temperature rises and you spontaneously begin sweating, even though the covers on your bed are thin.

All three situations involve sweating.

But are they doing the same thing to the body?

Before we dig deeper into the relationship between sweating and health, we first need to understand why the body sweats.

Why Does the Body Sweat?

Sweating is a natural physiological function that helps regulate body temperature.

Our hypothalamus is the center of thermal regulation. If body temperature becomes elevated by producing too much heat or receiving too much heat, the hypothalamus sends signals through the sympathetic nerves to stimulate the eccrine sweat glands.

When sweat evaporates from the skin, it helps remove heat and prevents the core body temperature from continuing to rise.

Through this process, the body loses heat, fluid, and electrolytes.

So sweating should be good, right?

Well, instead of simply answering the question with yes or no, we should look at what sweating does, what it accomplishes, and whether our body can adequately recover from it.

That is an important distinction when we talk about sweating and health.

Not All Sweating Is the Same

We can sweat in many different situations:

  • Exercise
  • High environmental temperatures
  • Fever from an infection
  • Hormonal imbalances, especially those involving the thyroid

But not all sweating is created equal.

In Scenario #1, sweating during exercise can actually be a good way to build endurance. More than simply producing sweat, exercise trains the thermoregulating center in the brain to become more adaptive.

Functional Medicine incorporates exercise, such as HIIT workouts, into lifestyle changes as part of the prescription.

When exercising and sweating train our body to become more adaptive, that can be beneficial.

You may have also heard about “sweating to detox.”

Some research has shown the potential for sweat to eliminate toxins such as BPA or heavy metals. However, overheating can become another issue for your overall health.

This is why looking at sweating and health requires us to consider more than how much we sweat. We also need to consider why we are sweating and how our body responds afterward.

The TCM Perspective: Everything in Moderation

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the way we look at sweat is similar to how we look at many things:

Everything in moderation.

While sweating can potentially help the body adapt and get rid of waste, it can also deplete us, especially in situations such as night sweats during menopause or cold sweats associated with anxiety.

In TCM, sweat is viewed as a fluid nourished by Heart Qi.

Sweating induced by exercise is a normal physiological phenomenon. However, prolonged sweating can deplete Heart Qi and affect the Heart meridian, especially when fluids are not replenished in time.

Then you might ask:

“Wouldn’t drinking water after sweating be enough?”

Not necessarily.

Why Replacing Water May Not Be the Whole Picture

Sweating causes the body to lose not only water but also electrolytes.

While replenishing electrolytes can definitely help, it doesn’t address the whole picture.

When someone is already depleted because of chronic illness, prolonged exhaustion, chronic emotional dysregulation, or the menopausal transition, replenishing water or electrolytes may not be enough because the body is already in a state of depleted reserves.

The underlying imbalance can make it more difficult for the body to restore what has been lost.

The body in this state is like dry, cracked soil.

Adding water certainly helps, but one watering may not be enough to restore its moisture and vitality. The soil also needs nourishment, time, and the ability to retain what it receives.

In the same way, recovery may require more than simply replacing fluids. The body may also need rest, nutrition, and support for the underlying deficiency.

This is another reason the relationship between sweating and health is not as simple as saying sweating is always beneficial. We also have to consider what the body has available to replenish what has been lost.

How Do You Know If You’re Sweating Too Much?

The first thing to consider is whether your sweating is happening under appropriate conditions.

It’s normal to sweat when you’re hiking up a tall mountain or running at six miles per hour.

But if you’re sitting in an air-conditioned room and can’t stop sweating, that is out of proportion to your activity level.

You may also experience dizziness, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, palpitations, or anxiety, all of which need immediate attention.

Second, observe whether your body can stop sweating efficiently.

While sweating helps cool us down, it can also be a useful indicator of how well our body adapts to change.

If your body can cool down easily, the sweating should gradually stop once the activity slows down.

If it doesn’t, you may have difficulty stopping the sweating and end up feeling even more exhausted or depleted afterward.

Pay Attention to How You Feel After Sweating

When thinking about sweating and health, what happens afterward can tell us just as much as the sweating itself.

After sweating, ask yourself:

  • Did the sweating make sense for the activity and environment?
  • Did it gradually stop after the activity ended?
  • Did my heart rate and energy return to normal?
  • Did I feel refreshed afterward, or unusually drained?
  • Am I sweating during sleep or while at rest without a clear reason?

These questions can help you pay closer attention to how your body responds rather than assuming that more sweating is always better.

The goal is not simply to produce more sweat.

The goal is to understand whether your body is adapting appropriately and whether it can recover from what it has lost.

When Sweating Deserves Medical Attention

New, unexplained, or drenching sweating—especially when accompanied by fever, chest discomfort, fainting, persistent palpitations, unexplained weight loss, or significant weakness—should not automatically be attributed to exercise, menopause, or a TCM deficiency pattern.

It deserves appropriate medical evaluation.

Understanding sweating and health also means recognizing when sweating may be communicating something that requires further attention.

The Bigger Picture: Is Sweating Good or Bad?

The answer isn’t simply yes or no.

Sweating is a normal and important physiological process. During exercise, it can be part of training the body to adapt and build endurance.

But more sweat does not automatically mean more health.

From a TCM perspective, we also need to consider what the body is losing through sweating, whether the body has enough reserves to recover, and whether the sweating itself is appropriate for the situation.

The question is not only:

“Am I sweating?”

It is also:

“Why am I sweating, and how well is my body recovering afterward?”

Sometimes sweating is part of building resilience.

Other times, it may be a sign that the body is already depleted and needs more support.

Learning to recognize the difference is part of understanding—and respecting—what your body is trying to tell you.

And ultimately, that may be the most important thing to remember about sweating and health: we shouldn’t judge the health of the body simply by how much it sweats. We need to look at the entire pattern, the circumstances surrounding the sweating, and how well the body restores itself afterward.

Anxiety and Depression: What Is Your Body Trying to Tell You? (Part 2)

In Part 1, we explored how anxiety and depression can be influenced by gut health, inflammation, metabolism, blood sugar, and hormones.

How Does Traditional Chinese Medicine View Anxiety and Depression?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views mood disorders as manifestations of imbalance within the body’s organ systems.

Each organ is associated with particular emotions and physiological functions, and when those systems become imbalanced, both physical and emotional symptoms may appear.

Rather than separating the mind from the body, TCM recognizes that they continuously influence one another.

The Spleen: Digestion and Clear Thinking

In TCM, the Spleen is responsible for both digestion and thinking.

When the Spleen has abundant Qi and Blood, it supports clear, organized, and focused thinking.

This is one reason TCM has always recognized the close relationship between digestive health and mental function.

Whether someone experiences anxiety or depression, it is common for their thoughts to feel disorganized or difficult to control.

Many people describe this feeling as “not feeling like themselves.”

The Spleen also produces the Qi and Blood that nourish the Shen, often translated as the spirit or consciousness.

When the Spleen is strong, the Shen is well nourished, supporting emotional stability, mental clarity, and awareness.

However, when digestion becomes weak, the Spleen also becomes weakened.

A weak Spleen cannot efficiently transform food into the Qi and Blood needed to nourish the Shen.

As a result, people may experience digestive symptoms such as:

  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • A feeling of heaviness

When the Spleen cannot properly transform and transport fluids, dampness accumulates.

This dampness can cloud the Clear Yang and the Shen, affecting executive function, cognitive clarity, and emotional stability.

Someone with Spleen Qi deficiency may experience:

  • Brain fog
  • Slow thinking
  • A heavy sensation in the body
  • Overthinking
  • Mental fatigue

The Liver: Keeping Qi Moving

Although every organ contributes to emotional regulation, the Liver and Kidneys play especially important roles.

The Liver is responsible for maintaining the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body.

When someone experiences anxiety or depression, the flow of Qi often becomes stagnant.

This stagnation may manifest as:

  • Thoughts that feel stuck
  • Poor mental clarity
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Emotional frustration

From a modern perspective, Liver Qi stagnation can resemble poor regulation of the sympathetic nervous system or autonomic nervous system.

Yin, Yang, and Emotional Balance

TCM views health as a balance between Yin and Yang.

The key to maintaining that balance is the smooth, unobstructed flow of Qi, allowing Yin and Yang to support and nourish one another.

When Qi becomes blocked, Yin and Yang can no longer regulate each other effectively.

In general:

  • Yang deficiency may present with symptoms more commonly associated with depression.
  • Yin deficiency may allow Yang to become relatively hyperactive, contributing to symptoms commonly seen with anxiety.

What Causes Liver Qi Stagnation?

Liver Qi stagnation may develop from both internal and external factors.

Internally, constantly suppressing emotions such as stress, anger, sadness, or worry can gradually interfere with the smooth flow of Qi.

Keeping everything inside may eventually contribute to stagnation.

Externally, stressful life circumstances or unhealthy relationships can also create a sense of feeling emotionally suppressed, leading to the same pattern.

The Kidneys and Emotional Resilience

The Kidneys play an important role in resilience.

In TCM, the Kidneys store our Essence (Jing), Yin, Yang, and Qi, providing the foundation that helps us adapt to life’s changes.

We inherit our Kidney Essence from our parents.

As we grow, this Essence supports the development of our Qi, Yin, and Yang.

Some people naturally inherit a stronger constitutional foundation than others, which may help explain why certain individuals are more susceptible to emotional challenges.

However, this does not mean our resilience cannot be strengthened.

Rebuilding Your Foundation

One of the goals of TCM is to help preserve and rebuild the body’s foundation.

We can support ourselves by:

  • Avoiding overexertion
  • Following the natural rhythms of day and night
  • Respecting seasonal changes
  • Understanding our personal limits
  • Allowing ourselves adequate rest instead of constantly pushing beyond our capacity

These simple principles help conserve our energy and strengthen our resilience, especially during challenging periods of life.
