Cupping therapy typically does not hurt, and some people find it to be quite relaxing. Heat is used to create suction on the skin and the sensation is described as a deep massage-like feeling. The cups are generally left in place for between 5-20 minutes while their effects take effect.
How does cupping therapy work?
Cupping therapy works by introducing negative pressure to the area of treatment, which sucks up underlying tissue toward the surface of the skin. This helps loosen tight muscles, stimulate lymphatic drainage, increase blood flow, and draw out toxins from deep within tissue to help reduce inflammation and improve healing.
